Omarsa leads the way again by achieving Carbon Neutral Certification for all its ASC shrimp

Durán, February 18th, 2021. – In January 2020, Omarsa Sustainable Shrimp exporter, started the process of measuring the carbon emissions released from their production in the farms and processing plants.

The measures included Direct Emissions like fuel consumption, refrigerant gas consumption, generation of biological waste, among others; and Indirect Emissions like the ones derived from the acquisition of electrical energy, flights from personal and miscellaneous waste.

Once the initial evaluation was made, Omarsa started making changes to reduce and offset emissions internally. The changes included the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment which minimizes the consumption of electrical energy and fossil fuels. Another way that Omarsa has helped in the compensation of their footprint is by planting and caring for native forest trees within 2 of its farms. Finally, they bought carbon bonds in order to compensate and neutralize the emissions that could not be offset and neutralize with the changes made and the forests.

Sambito, an Ecuadorian Environmental Consultant, was the company that accompanied Omarsa in the process of estimating the carbon footprint until they received the certification from the German certification body TÜV Rheinland.

This certification is evidence of their commitment to caring for the environment and demonstrates their willingness to offset the impacts generated by the exercise of the shrimp processing activity. For more than a decade they began with the implementation of practical improvements throughout their production chain, to ensure that the exercise of their activity takes place within a controlled environment and that it reduces impacts, however, like all human caused activity, the generation of impacts is inevitable.

Achieving this certification represents for Omarsa the closing of that cycle to guarantee that our activities are truly sustainable and, consequently, friendly to the environment and our surroundings.

“With this action, Omarsa seeks to continue leading the initiatives towards sustainability in the industry.” Sandro Coglitore, General Manager.

Omarsa’s next step to continue the path on sustainable shrimp production is to add other items to their product range and continue looking for ways that shrimp farming has the least possible impact on the environment.
